Breakfast At Angus's

Jon managed to stay awake the whole night, wide eyed staring across the cavernous room to the opening at the back of the cave. Firelight only cast a dim glow in the early hours of the morning but he nonetheless planned to see danger before danger saw him!. If he had any thought of sleeping, it evaporated when he heard a gravelly “Ahm so hungry…” come from the darkness of the opening shortly after Rae walked back there. He saw her come tip toeing back in but a moment so he was a little relieved. Not enough to sleep, mind you!

He heard a rustling outside the cave and he carefully snuck through the entryway and looked

out to the cave opening. Dawn was beginning to break with a glow in the eastern
sky. The cacophony of birds and beasts from the forest was deafening! It looked to be a clear morning but the ground just beyond the cave was soaked from the night before. Rivulets of water ran down the sides of the rock face. Three of the wolves lay in a circle just outside the entryway and Jon would have had to step on them to go further. Three of the wolves were nowhere to be seen.

He stretched and yawned while rubbing his eyes. Blaidd Brawd turned an ear towards him but didn’t otherwise show any sign he cared. All the running water made it impossible to ignore how badly he had to pee! Jon started to walk through the wolves and they all softly growled at him. Jon walked back in and saw Rae getting the clothes down from the fireside. “Jon! Put some clothes on!” She threw his tunic and pants at him. “I really have to pee!”

Not so wee doggies
Rae walked out with him and the wolves let them pass. Each walked to a separate side of the cave mouth and as they finished, a loud crashing sound combined with bleating, growling, and snarling came up from the forest. A few moments later, three wolves came out from the woodline dragging behind them a huge deer. They dragged it up to the cave mouth and then headed back into the trees. Standing at the side of the cave, Jon and Rae each noticed darkly stained, sharpened wooden logs sticking out from the upper edge of the cave mouth.

Everyone was up and dressed when Jon and Rae made it back to the den. Packs were made ready and Angus stood looking a bit forlorn. “Ah’d fix ye something fittin’ for breakfast, but Ah was nae expecting company…”

“Mam, Ama, come look!” came a cry from Mae at the cave mouth. They all walked out and saw three substantial deer carcasses draped on the stoop of the cave. Snarling snuffling sounds came from just below where the wolves could be seen making light work of three more deer. Angus brightened immediately. “Ach! Back inside, all of ye! Ah’ll have these prepared faster than ye can say “cheese and crackers.” Which is what Ah’d suggest ye make ready in there while Ah’m workin’!”

Angus stepped outside and there was a resounding thud on the side of the cave with a bit of a squish thrown in. A second, and then third, followed shortly thereafter. “Ah see ye brought meh three of these beauties! Ach, yer a right fine pack of doggies! Forgot mah knife!” Angus hopped back into the cave and took a knife the size of Jon out of the pantry. “And would ye mind to put some water on ta boil? Oh, Ah see ye’v taken to that already!” With that he hopped right out, knife in hand.

Disclaimer demanded by John

The hopping and squishing left everyone a little stunned when in popped a very gory Angus with meat hanging all over his body and more in a large basket he set by the fire. “If ye will excuse me for a few moments, probably best Ah freshen up a wee bit. Here, this’ll do nicely. See to the cooking then!” With that he hopped into his private chamber, meat cloak and all.

No sooner than he hopped out of the den, roaring and hissing burst out from his room. “Ach, get down ye overgrown scaly rat! Ah said get down! Ah brought ye breakfast so quiet down! Right proper wee guests out there, don’t go disturbing them while I get cleaned up.” There was a large splash and an odd sound that many would describe as some sort of singing. The song continued right up to Angus hopping out in a bright tartan kilt and clean shirt. “Well, then! Let’s eat and see ye on yer journey!”

As they finished eating, Angus saw them to the door. “Rae, ye’v been so kind to me. All of you. Even yer not so wee doggies. Ah hope mah hospitality would repay some of the disruption. Fer the rest, Ah hope this might make up the difference.” He handed Rae a sack of coins. “Ah promise tah nae eat yer kinsmen and mah hearth is always home to Clan Morgan.” His eye reddened and another large tear started to form. Rae gave him a hug and beckoned him to bend down so she could kiss him on the top of his head.

With that, they mounted their wolves and sped into the forest.

    2. It will be interesting to see what happens when folks return home. I have to weigh out what Arwel and kin do about the sheep raiding. And now I'm not entirely certain the wolves don't decide to hang out with him!

    3. Thank you! We need to get you into the game via Discord or something. I need someone who pokes at things to see if they move...

  2. On the 6th paragraph it should be Rae not Mae. However, this post was phenomenal and I hung on to every world-even tho I was in that cave myself!

  3. Was that you that saw them or is this a stolen memory?

  4. Well did Mae just come out of nowhere? I guess I did steal it

    1. Yeah, I guess she kinda did. You had already had your moment on stage! Maybe for the screenplay we give a little more continuity.
